FIA opens selection process for new team

The FIA has opened a selection process for a new team to join the Formula 1 grid from as early as the 2015 campaign, a move that would bring the number of outfits involved in the sport back up to 12.

Interested parties have been requested to register “a formal expression of interest” with the governing body’s Secretariat by 5pm CET on Friday January 3, following which each party will be given further details.

“The FIA has decided to open a new selection process to identify a candidate team to participate at a competitive level in the FIA Formula One World Championship from the start of the 2015 or the 2016 season up to 2020 inclusive,” read a statement issued by the governing body on Wednesday evening.

Formula 1 will introduce a budget cap from the start of 2015, with basic terms being agreed at a meeting of the sport’s Strategy Group and Commission in Paris on Monday.

A deadline for the regulations to be decided in full has been set as June of next year.

The concept, which has long been under discussion, was put under the spotlight once more this season, with a number of teams admitting to financial struggles.

Finale to be worth double points from 2014

Formula 1 drivers and teams will be awarded double points for the final round of the season from 2014 onwards, with the sport attempting to prolong and increase the excitement of championship battles.

The tweak was agreed by the sport’s Strategy Group and Commission in Paris on Monday, and will immediately become part of the regulations as both bodies were handed rule-changing rights by the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) last week.

Both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ standings will be affected, with 50 points going to the winner, 36 for second place, 30 for third and so on throughout the top ten positions.

Teams reject forced pit-stop proposal

Formula 1 teams have rejected a proposal to force drivers to make at least two pit-stops at each Grand Prix.

FIA President Jean Todt and Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone had initially discussed the idea in Abu Dhabi, with tyre supplier Pirelli eager to avoid a repeat of the failures it suffered at the British Grand Prix.

But when it was highlighted at the latest meeting of the Formula 1 Sporting Group and Commission, it received no support from teams, who were concerned about artificial strategies and similar race scenarios.
